ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Considering the court battle over Governor Kathy Hochul‘s mask mandate, we spoke with Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente about where his mandate stands. Picente says right now Oneida County is following the state guidelines and that we must wait and see what happens with the court ruling and then go from there.
If the mandate is overturned, Picente says it will then come down to how the court determines what each level of government can and can’t do. But he reminds us that this mask mandate will be re-evaluated come February first. The original mandate was put in place due to the holiday season and the increased number of social gatherings. Picente thinks we are moving in the right direction.
“Clearly the numbers are coming down. We’re still seeing a couple hundred a day. It’s not the 7 to 8 hundred we were seeing weeks ago. The severity is less of these cases while I’m always concerned about hospitalizations and certainly about deaths, we have to keep an eye on that. We’ve always from day 1 have looked at hospitalizations and the fatality rate of this and those are still disturbing.” – Anthony Picente, Oneida County Executive
