UTICA, N.Y. ( WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Construction has started on the Olbiston Apartments on Genesee St. in Utica. Starting with the abatement process, which will remove asbestos and lead paint, preparing for the building to be re-developed into new affordable housing units.

“You’re gonna see all kinds of teams here with the abatement all new electrical all new plumbing. It’s all going to be brand new. All new appliances and flooring windows doors it’s a massive overhaul on this property,” said Tim Tarbox, Construction Manager at Liberty Affordable Housing.

The project will also focus on making the switch from gas to electrical appliances. before liberty affordable housing purchased the building…the construction team did a walkthrough and ensured the building is structurally sound.

“This building was built to withstand anything,” said Tarbox.

Liberty will try to preserve the original style of the inside of the building such as the flooring in the hallways or the fireplaces in the apartments. although improvements will be made, there will be no change to the look of the building.

“Everything will be kept the same because you are in the historical district all new windows will match what goes there all the patios will be the same everything is going to be just like it was when it was built in the early 1900s,” said Tarbox.

The construction process is expected to take 24 months and will be completed in April of 2024.
