Hospitals Submit Surge Plans

Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) and Rome Memorial Hospital submitted their surge plans to increase capacity by 50 percent. This is required by the New York State Department of Health.

President and CEO of Mohawk Valley Health System, Darlene Stromstad, says MVHS staffs about 375 patients on a regular basis between the two hospitals. “We are planning on targeting 525 as our minimum number and I think we have exceeded that somewhat. But, again that will require additional supplies and additional staff.” —Stromstad

Stromstad says it will take about 10 days to have the beds ready. On the other hand, Rome Memorial Hospital is surging up by using their resources inside and outside the hospital.

For example, there are areas within the hospital and people that can be reassigned where needed most. Also, their hospital is in contact with providers and facilities that can support surge needs, like Griffis Surgery Center.

In addition, both hospitals are recruiting retired doctors and nurses within the past few years.
