HERKIMER, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – The students at Herkimer Elementary School and Herkimer High School came together to learn about agriculture on Tuesday, March 21.

Along with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County, students of the two schools came together for National Agriculture Day, The Cooperative Extension provided tomato and basil seeds for the elementary children to plant and bring home.

High School FFA Members, as well as members of the Herkimer agriculture classes were on hand to read “Tomatoes For Neela” by Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi to the elementary school students. In the book, children learn how people connect to other cultures through food.

“I think AFNR [agriculture, food and natural resources] classes and FFA [Future Farmers of America] members should continue to do this in the future because it was a good experience for learning and it helped me with my future career choices,” Herkimer senior Ti’yanna Fowler said of the event.

The event coincides with National Agricultural Literacy Week, which runs through Friday, March 24.
