COVID-19 Daily Briefing: Wednesday, March 18th, Afternoon


(WUTR-TV) — Continuing coverage with COVID-19 in Oneida County. As of Wednesday morning the county confirmed a second positive case for Coronavirus. Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente will give more details on COVID-19 in our community this afternoon during his daily briefing at 3 p.m. You can watch that live on our website

There are still 2 mobile testing sites in Oneida County and there are plans to open more. There are five testing sites throughout Otsego and Herkimer counties. Please be advised, that access to these testing centers is by doctor referral only. The are not no appointment facility.

Currently there are more than 2,300 cases of Coronavirus across New York state, As of this morning, just under 23% of those are in the hospitals.

This morning, Governor Cuomo said that, in the coming weeks, it is estimated that New York state would need upwards of 110,00 hospital beds. The current capacity is at 53,000.

The governor announced that he is making it easier to open up new or decommissioned hospital beds in the state. He also said that President Trump has agreed to send the navy’s hospital ship to New York. The naval hospital ship is a floating, It’s a fully equiped medical center.

In Albany this morning, Cuomo issued a mandate that no business in the state can have more than half of their scheduled staff report to work at one time. This policy will not include grocery stores, food delivery services, drug stores and health care facilities. Work from home

The governor also announced that his office and the state Legislature have reached an agreement on a bill mandating that employers provide paid sick time for workers. That provision of the bill would be, not only for the duration of the Coronavirus crisis, but beyond. The state Legislature is set to vote on the bill on Wednesday.

In Washington, the announcement has been made that, by mutual agreement, the border between the United States and Canada will be closed. President Trump says this will not affect trade.

This Wednesday afternoon, congressman Anthony Brindisi released a statement that their office will be serving contituents remotely. All of their locations are closed.

In Washington, White House officials is working with Congressional Republicans to create an emergency stimulus packagae that could send two $1000 checks to many Americans. They are also giving $300 billion towards helping small businesses avoid massive layoffs.
