In a CNN report on Wednesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House Coronavirus task force, said the U.S. should have 100 million doses of a candidate COVID-19 vaccine by the end of 2020. The vaccine candidate was created by biotech company Monderna in partnership with NIAID, and the last stages of trials in volunteers should be done by mid-summer.

This final stage, commonly called Phase III in the medical field, should begin sometime during the first week of July and will have around 30,000 participants. The vaccine will be administered to people from ages 18 to 55 and to some elderly people with underlying health conditions. If successful, scientists should have enough data by November or December, to determine whether or not the vaccine has worked. Facui explained that it’s still too premature to say if this vaccine will be the end all be all, or if it will require new developments each year, similar to the flu shot.

Information from the governor’s daily address and COVID-19 updates for Oneida, Herkimer and Otsego counties will be in the Wednesday evening daily briefing.
