County Sheriffs To Defy State Mug Shot Ban

The Sheriffs of two Upstate New York counties say that their interpretation of the new state law banning the release of mug shots does not apply to their agencies. As a result, Oneida and Lewis county Sheriff Departments will diseminate mug shots taken at their facilities.

A ban, instituted at the urging of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was part of the recently passed New York State budget. Several police agencies, including the State Police and the Utica city police, have announced that they will abide by the prohibition. Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol and Lewis County Sheriff Michael Carpinelli held a press conference on Friday to explain their decision. Eyewitness News report Ben Dennis was at that conference.
