Schenevus and Worcester school officials are considering the merger of the two school districts; both superintendents applied for a state grant to conduct a study to see if a merge is feasible.
Schenevus, like many rural school districts, faces financial hardship.
“We are living within our budget right now. When we get to the end of this budget year, if there have been huge increases in any costs we will not be able to cover those increases–just based on what we get in state aid and what we ask our property owners to be able to pay in taxes.”Theresa Carlin, Schenevus Central School District Superintendent
Both superintendents say if the merge study doesn’t work out, they will look to share services.
If a merge does not happen, Carlin says Schenevus’ future might include “thinking outside the box, which possibly could be tuitioning-out our students to another school district. Most likely Worcester.”
