UTICA, NY (WUTR-TV) — Construction continues at the Washington Street Parking Garage.
Mayor Robert Palmieri talks about repairing all the City’s public parking garages in his proposed 2020-21 budget. On Jan. 27. 2020 the entrance by the Delta Hotels by Marriott Utica closed for construction. There is still available parking inside the garage through the Hanna Park Dr. and Broadway entrance.
The Washington St. Garage was built in 1980, and Palmieri says work needed to be done sooner than later.
“…We developed the Downtown and developing the need for parking. It’ll be safe, it’ll be clean, it’ll be upgraded. We either neglect them and eventually what you have to do is have demolition of them. Before we got to that point, we had an engineering company go through them, got critiques on them and what needs to be done, what’s the dollar amount and we did analyze that. Now the plan moving forward is that each year we’ll be bonding out a little bit more to make sure we have modernize parking,” says Palmieri.
In early January, the Utica Common Council approved for the City to bond $4 million dollars for repairing the Washington St. Garage.
“I think the bottom line is that $15 million (the cost of repairs for all City public garages) is needed and we’re doing that in increments of $4 million, part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) will be part of it so it’s not a one time only. We put $11 million into it. We do it so it’s scattered out a little bit to continue to put money into it,” says Palmieri.
Construction for the Washington St. Garage will continue for the next 2-3 years.
