Having watched their playoff position dip dramatically the Utica Comets entered Wednesday (02/15) night’s game in must win territory. Trouble was they were hosting the Toronto Marlies, a squad they were just 1-5 against this season.
The Marlies made things interesting to start the game. Toronto scored the lone first period goal in what was otherwise an uneventful 20 minutes. The opportunity came on a Comets turnover, and ended when Andreas Johnsson found the back of the net for his 14th of the season.
Utica waited until the second period to capitalize, but when they finally struck they did so with vengeance. Borna Rendulic got the scoring started when he put home a power play goal. Comets would go onto score another four including a short handed goal as they beat Toronto 5-2.
Cody Kunyk walked away with first star honors. The forward ended the game with three points, and scored what ended up being the game winning goal.
