Matt Campbell, the Rome native golfer, has a late tee time in the second round of the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. In fact, Campbell is in the last threesome to go off the tenth tee at 3:42PM eastern time Friday afternoon. Campbell shot a five over par 77 in Thursday’s first round at the Open. Campbell will need to get off to a good start in the second round to make the top 60 players on the leaderboard and stay in the open on the weekend.
The back nine proved a problem for Campbell Thursday, going four over par on the back side. That included a triple bogey eight on the 599 yard, par four fourteenth hole. The RFA graduate drove way left off the tee and had to play the ball back into the fairway to have a shot at the green. His third shot was again well left leaving a long chip to the green. He ran into further trouble around the green that is not only multitiered on the putting surface but adjacent to the green. Campbell had bogeys on holes six, ten and seventeen. He had a double bogey at eight, to go with the triple on fourteen. The 27 year old Campbell carded birdies on three, nine and eleven.
Campbell is one stroke ahead two notable names on the tour; Jason Day and Rory McIlroy. Rickie Fowler was the first round leader with a seven under par 65.
