Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, facing criticism that its products are not “All Natural” as it claims on labels, has announced it will drop the use of the term on ice creams and frozen yogurts that contain alkalized cocoa, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil and other processed ingredients.
“Ben & Jerry’s is doing the right thing by taking the phrase ‘all natural’ off its labels if the products have factory-made ingredients,” said Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “The Food and Drug Administration could do consumers and food manufacturers a great service by actually defining when the word ‘natural’ can and cannot be used to characterize a given ingredient.”
The CSPI wrote to Ben & Jerry’s parent company, Unilever, last month complaining that at least 48 B & J products were improperly labeled as ‘all natural’. The watchdog group was careful to note that none of these ingredients are unsafe, but that they considered them to fall outside what might be eligible to be called natural; though, as mentioned above, that remains officially undefined.
The CSPI had no further quibbles with the naming or branding of B & J. But it does take issue with the unhealthful, “artery-clogging” ice cream, according to its news release today.
Ben & Jerry’s, with aptly named flavors like Chunky Monkey and Chubby Husband, can pack 40 plus grams of sat fat per half cup serving.
