Accident leads to vehicle fire in New Hartford

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY-TV) – The New Hartford Police Department is reporting that a man and young child were taking to the hospital this morning after being struck by another motorist.

Around 7:15am on Monday August 16th, 22-year-old Mariamu Muya of Utica was driving North on Chapman Road in her 2015 Jeep Cherokee when she failed to stop for the flashing red traffic signal at the Higby Road intersection.

At the same time 35-year-old Thomas Grace of New Hartford was driving East on Higby Road along with a juvenile passenger when he was suddenly hit by Muya’s vehicle.

The resulting collision sent Grace’s vehicle off the roadway and then catching on fire soon after. The vehicle was completely engulfed in flames before being put out.

All the parties involved were transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Muya was issued a traffic ticket and will appear at the New Hartford Court at-a-later-date.
