$9M facility comes to Griffiss

NYS invests in drone technology in Mohawk Valley

ROME N.Y. (WUTR-TV) — On Sunday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the 23rd proposal of his 2020 State of the State agenda, which is investing $9 million to establish a small unmanned aerial system, or sUAS, experimentation and test facility at Griffiss International Airport.

This will be the largest indoor drone test site in the country.

“New York’s forward-thinking investment in drone technology is placing the Mohawk Valley on the global stage for a growing industry,” Governor Cuomo said. “This groundbreaking project will help solidify the region’s status as a national hub for innovation, support our emergency response capabilities and bolster our ongoing efforts to rebuild the upstate economy region by region.”

“Our hope is that it grows more jobs in this sector for our community and our region,” Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said. “Upon the sky is the limit, it really opens up a lot of doors for us now and it will put us more on the map.”

The project is expected to be complete this year.
