First American Hockey League game played outdoors in Oneida County

The 2021 AIS Empire State Classic will be a once-in-a-lifetime showcase with the first ever AHL outdoor game in Oneida County featuring the Utica Comets vs. the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday, Feb. 13. 2021. The event will also feature a game between the Utica College Men’s Hockey Team and Oswego State. A number of additional exhibitions and events will be announced throughout the next year.

The outdoor rink will be at the Griffiss Business & Technology Park grounds. An exact location will be announced at a later date.

“The Comets staff is dedicated to making the 2021 AIS Empire State Classic the event our area has ever seen,” says Robert Esche, President of the Utica Comets. “We plan to put on a truly once-in-a-lifetime, immersive experience for all ages, that our area will embrace and celebrate for years to come.”

Rome Mayor, Mayor Jacqueline Izzo, is just one of many local officials who are excited about the outdoor hockey rink. “[The rink] set up beautifully for it. We have this huge runway with lots of space – it’s flat so were able to and well have a lot of parking.- We can put a lot of parking on the runway so its conducive to a large crowd,” says Izzo. The rink will have about 16-thousand seats, a full sheet of NHL-caliber ice and portable video boards.

You are able to make a deposit for the 2021 AIS Empire State Classic. Deposits are just $25 per seat, and lock in your spot at the event. There is no limit to the number of seats one person can reserve. Season Ticket Members received 2021 AIS Empire State Classic deposit information in their renewal packets, which were mailed out this week. The general public can place a deposit by calling 315-790-9070 or by visiting the Adirondack Bank Center Box Office.
