WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WUTR-TV) — One local business is keeping their 16 year toy donation tradition alive. Each holiday season, New York Sash partners with the Utica College Pioneers to donate thousands of teddy bears to children in need throughout the Mohawk Valley.
There’s usually a hockey game and when the Pioneers score their first goal, the crowd throws teddy bears onto the ice. All of them are then collected to be donated. Since there are no college sporting events, they had to get a little creative for this year’s giveaway.
“We’ve decided this year to take the teddy bear toss on the road and we made a trailer and we’ve been bring it to different locations and we give all of the fans and opportunity to brings the teddy bears to the trailer. All of the teddy bears raised go to operation sunshine and toys for tots. So it’s been different, it’s been a lot different.” – Scott Hayes Owner, New York SASH
Scott says they were pleasantly surprised that the community has been even more generous than previous years. There’s still time to make a donation. Tomorrow they will be at Babe’s at Harbor Point in Utica from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and you can toss your donation in to the hockey net.
