15-year-old taken into custody due to illegal weapon possession


UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY-TV) – The Utica Police Department is reporting that a minor has been taken into custody due to an illegal weapons possession.

Around 11:40pm on Tuesday August 25th, members of UPD’s Crime Prevention Unit attempted to conduct a field interview of a man that was near the intersection of Miller Street and Arthur Street in Utica.

When Officers approached the man, he fled on foot in the direction of Square Street and Neilson Street, ultimately blocking himself into a fenced-in area. It was at this time that officers witnessed the man remove and then discard something over the fence.

Upon searching the area, a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol was found. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and the handgun was confiscated.

During further investigation, it was learned that the male suspect is only 15 years old and is already currently on probation.

He was held overnight pending Family Court proceedings on Wednesday August 25th.

His name will not be released due to age.
