Local humane society hosts virtual contest: ‘Strut Your Mutt’

Coronavirus

HERKIMER COUNTY, NY (WUTR-TV) — This year would have been the Herkimer County Humane Society’s 25th ‘Mutt Strut’ event at the Herkimer County Community College. It’s an event that brings a large chunk of change to help the shelter. Due to current public health safety measures, the event won’t happen this year. However, the team has an alternate plan.

During the covid-19 pandemic, the doors have been open at the Herkimer County Humane Society. Board President of HCHS, Robert Schrader, says the shelter has seen the number adoptions go up. “As far as people coming in and adopting it was a good time for them to come get a pet, and spend some time with it,” says Schrader. In that way, the pandemic helped but in other ways, the board had to cancel one of their biggest fundraising events.

Instead, the board has came up with the idea to hold a similar event completely online called ‘Strut Your Mutt.’ The top two pets with the most votes will be displayed on the Fiberdyne LED Billboards for the entire community to see for the month of August. With the help from Fiberdyne Labs and the Staffworks Fund, this event was possible for the shelter to hold.

What exactly do you have to do? Submit a cute picture of your pet, could be any animal you consider your pet. Your pet does not have to be from HCHS. Once you enter, tell your loved ones to vote for you! It’s a dollar per vote, you can vote as many times as you wish.

The contest started July 7th. Within three days, the shelter has raised $4,100 (not including the Staff Works match grant.) Enter now through July 18th, voting ends July 31st.
