Several Fires Hit CharlesTown USA Mall

"Suspicious" Fires Found on Different Floors

UTICA–Several fires hit the former CharlesTown USA Mall Sunday evening in East Utica.

Utica Fire Chief Scott Ingersoll says the fires were on different floors of the building, and are currently deemed “suspicious” in nature.

Fire officials have responded to, at least, two “suspicious” fire incidents on site within the last month, Ingersoll says.

The Utica Fire Department says first responders worked to extinguish at least three fires, possibly four, after being advised of heavy black smoke on site around 6:45 p.m.

Their cause is currently unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.

First responders on scene included those from Utica, Schuyler and Frankfort Center.

“The conditions of the building are terrible right now. There’s a lot of collapse; the roof is collapsed in areas. Very dangerous for fire fighters to be working inside the structure. There are a lot of holes in the floors.”
