Utica PD Unveils New Equipment

The Utica Police department unveiled some new equipment today... A lighter, more accurate patrol rifle and something called an L-RAD. That's an acronym for "long-range acoustic device." This eight-thousand-dollar portable device can broadcast pre-recorded messages and alerts up to one-thousand yards. It acts as a p-a system, or speaker, that's so technically advanced, the sound can travel through walls.
It acts as a p-a system, or speaker, that's so technically advanced, the sound can travel through walls... Which is necessary in the event of a hostage situation or alerting large crowds.

"I've operated this device at fifteen feet and hid behind my vehicle and still had earplugs in, it's still very loud it emits a loud tone following our requests to disperse," said Sgt. Samuel Geddes.

“Any situation when we have large mass gathering of people obviously can be used for a couple reasons to give clear and distinct directions to leave the area and also as a distraction, to get them moving along," said Chief Mark Williams.

The L-RAD can transmit messages in several different languages and it’s the only one of its kind in the area.
