It has been a whirlwind of a few months from the big announcement to getting things ready, but, the day is finally here. The Utica comets played their first ever regular season game Friday night in Rochester against the Americans.
Eyewitness News spent some time with fans who were on their way to Rochester for the big game and were very excited. After a twenty year absence, the city of Utica once again has an AHL team to root for and it is something fans are not taking for granted.
"I have green and blue nail polish on for the Comets and my eye shadow is green and blue too so, I'm representing," said Danielle Lester.
Lester is just one of over 100 Comets fans who traveled to Rochester for the game on the sold out bus. Before leaving, they spent the afternoon pre-gaming at Tiny's Grill in Utica. She says now that Utica has its very own team, it is time to get on the Comets band wagon.
"I'm a very big hockey fan, I love the Buffalo Sabers, and now that we have a local team of course I would want to support it,” said Lester.
"We wanna support the Utica Comets they're here, they're back and it's an exciting time for everybody in this area and we want to support the team on the road as we do at home,” says Comet Fan Mark Laible.
The bus seats about 55 people and Utica Comets fans came out strong, filling up two busses heading to Rochester.
"The community support has been nonstop and its' been extraordinary since day one, it's exciting to see and it's exciting to work for an organization that has this kind of backing,” said Mark Caswell Jr. Director of Communications for the Comets.
"Catered to our wonderful fans and to our players over the years and now our latest team, our newest team, our great team, the Utica Comets," says Joanne Gerace who owns Tiny’s Grill.
And fans say they have waited a long time for this day to come.
"It's just crazy, it's hard to fathom because we've just waited so long for something like this," says Emily Walker.
"We need hockey back in this area you know, and Utica College hockey is great but this is even better so we're really excited,” said Comets fan Vinny Lorusso.
The Utica Comets first home game is on October 23rd. That game is sold out but if you still want to go don't worry, as part of a special "Fanfest" fans can watch the game on a big screen outside the AUD.
