Starbucks CEO asks customers to leave their guns behind, stops short of ban

National coffee chain Starbucks is sending a message to gun owners: please leave your weapons behind.
National coffee chain Starbucks is sending a message to gun owners: please leave your weapons behind.

CNN Money reports that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has refrained from issuing a ban on guns, but is making a request “through the lens of civility and respect.”

The chain was caught up in the nation’s gun debate recently when a group of firearms advocates launched “Starbucks Appreciation Day” in support of the company’s policy of permitting weapons within their stores.

Schultz says the company has refrained from banning guns in their stores because they don’t want employees placed in a position where they must confront a person carrying a gun.

He insists that the company is neither "pro" nor "anti" gun, but believes firearms "should not be a part of the Starbucks experience."
