Going Green: MVCC Waste Audit

If you happened to be at Mohawk Valley Community College today, it was a messy and smelly site. The college partnered with the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority this afternoon for its first-ever building waste audit.
If you happened to be at Mohawk Valley Community College today, it was a messy and smelly site.

The college partnered with the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority this afternoon for its first-ever building waste audit.

Students were busy sorting through piles of trash.  The purpose - - to improve campus recycling.

"I think it's important and that we need to see what stuff is being thrown away that shouldn't be and what stuff that could be recycled that is not being recycled. It's important, it will save the campus money and overall I think it's important for the environment and everything like that," said MVCC student Robert Thrasher.

About 15-percent of the garbage students sifted through today included items that could have been recycled.

The solid waste authority will be offering suggestions on how to improve recycling at MVCC in the coming weeks.
