The man who brutally murdered his girlfriend in her college at Brockport dorm room was sentenced today. Clayton Whittemore will serve 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Alex Kogut.

Whittemore was found guilty of the murder in May.  He was supposed to be sentenced in mid-July but that was postponed until today.  Whittemore admitted to beating 18 year-old Kogut to death in her dorm room at Brockport in September of 2012.  His defense claimed he was under extreme emotional disturbance at the time due to years of abuse at the hands of his father.  However, a jury disagreed.

There wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom today as Becky Kogut, Alex's mother, relived her oldest daughter life up until the day on September 29th ,2012 when Clayton Whittemore killed her.  She spoke directly to Clayton as he stood there in tears staring at the ground.  Becky Kogut said she trusted Clayton Whittemore.  She trusted him so much she couldn't believe he was her daughters killer.  Becky Kogut said Whittemore's family is evil and added instead of killing Kogut, he should have killed them.

District Attorney Sandra Doorley spoke after Becky Kogut saying Clayton Whittemore is a threat to society and deserves nothing less than the maximum sentence.  She added that Becky Kogut's speech was important for Clayton to hear, "I looked around I don't think there was a dry eye in the house.  She spoke from the heart.  She spoke about premonitions she had as a mother when she last dropped Alex off at college and talked about that awful night when she tried to get a hold of Clayton and what really happened again.  This is a parents worst nightmare. I can't imagine what the Kogut's are going through.

Becky Kogut said she last saw her daughter on September 22 2012. That was the day she dropped Alex off at college. She told the court she had a premonition she would never see her daughter again.

Kogut's mother asked Clayton for two things in court today.  She asked him directly for Alex's eyeglasses back and her time of death. Clayton Whittemore could provide neither..
