It was a big game Friday night for the Utica College Pioneers Men’s Hockey team as the regular season draws to a close. The AUD was packed with Pioneer fans not only supporting the team but also the local charity group the United Way.
The Pioneers beat Manhattan College five to three. But besides an exciting hockey game Friday night was also filled with t-shirts, games and prizes all to raise awareness and support for the local group United Way.
“This is a great way for us to inform a lot of people about the great work of united way and show support for the home town team,” said Brenda Episcopo.
Episcopo works for United Way, a group that raises money for different community programs. She says pairing with Utica College Hockey is a fun way to show the city what her local charity is all about.
"This is so phenomenal because it's our hometown team and a hometown charity and it's a great way to bring sports fans together with people making a difference in the community and get those people out to cheer for the team so it's such a great blend of energy,” said Episcopo.
And the head coach of the Pioneers says his organization is happy to help.
"United Way has been a great partner for us and our guys are always out in the community and they're a great community builder and supporter and they help so many different organizations under their umbrella so we welcome them into our building and give them great awareness in this town," said Gary Heenan, Head Coach of the Pioneers.
For everyone else it was a night of hockey, prizes and living united.
"It’s good to give back to the community that gives to us," says Lauren O’Rourke from Utica.
United Way is currently supporting more than 50 programs in the community.
