The 2nd Annual Gold Ribbon Game

A look at the 2nd annual Gold Ribbon game held between Hamilton College and Utica College.
DAVE CLAUSEN
" IT WAS JUST A DIFFERENT IDEA, IT WAS JUST SOMETHING WE WANTED TO BE UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT. TO BE ABLE TO JUMP OFF THE PAGE SO IT WASN'T JUST ANOTHER TEAM WEARING PINK JERSEY'S JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT."

FOR UTICA COLLEGE WOMEN'S HOCKEY HEAD COACH DAVE CLAUSEN THE IDEA WAS SIMPLE. FIND A NEW WAY TO BENEFIT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY THROUGH HIS WOMEN'S HOCKEY PROGRAM. LITTLE DID HE KNOW THE ANSWER WAS RIGHT ON CAMPUS.

BRIAN GRADY
" YOU KNOW I STARTED WORKING AT UC, I WORK OVER THERE NOW. AND HE SAID HEY, WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO PAIR UP. WE WANT TO GET A GAME GOING FOR A BENEFIT FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER AND HE KNEW OF THE SHAWN GRADY MEMORIAL FUND AND SAID WHATTYA THINK? "

THE SHAWN GRADY MEMORIAL FUND WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1991 AND IT'S GOAL IS TO HELP FAMILIES DEALING WITH CHILDHOOD CANCER AND THE HIGH MEDICALS BILLS THAT ARE A RESULT OF IT'S TREATMENT. A BATTLE AND A FINANCIAL STRUGGLE THE GRADY FAMILY KNOWS ALL TO WELL.

BRIAN GRADY
" WELL THE SHAWN GRADY MEMORIAL FUND IS NAMED AFTER MY BROTHER SHAWN. HE PASSED AWAY IN 1991, HE WAS A SENIOR HERE AT CLINTON HIGH SCHOOL. HE WAS A HECK OF AN ATHLETE, A THREE SPORT ATHLETE. ONCE HE PASS, OBVIOUSLY IT WAS VERY TRAGIC. HOW CAN WE HONOR HIS MEMORY, HOW CAN WE BEST PAY BACK AND TRIBUTE THE WAY PEOPLE WERE SO HELPFUL FOR US. SO THAT'S KINDA HOW THE COMMITTEE WAS BORN. WE'VE BEEN HERE NOW 21-22 YEARS AND WE'VE DOLED OUT OVER 500,000 DOLLARS TO LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED AND IT'S A GREAT TRIBUTE TO SHAWN, A GREAT WAY TO HONOR HIS MEMORY BUT ALSO A GREAT WAY TO GIVE BACK TO PEOPLE WHO NEED THE MONEY. "

KROL FAMILY
" BRENDAN WAS DIAGNOSED IN 2008, WE GOT HOOKED UP WITH THE SHAWN GRADY FUND IN 2009-ISH. THEY WERE VERY HELPFUL, THEY CAME TO A COUPLE OF FUNDRAISERS THAT WERE HELD IN THE COMMUNITY FOR BRENDAN AND EACH TIME DONTATED A GOOD CHUNCK OF CHANGE FOR US WHICH WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL BECAUSE AT THE TIME, I HAD TO STOP WORKING. "

THE SHAWN GRADY FUND AND UTICA COLLEGE HOCKEY SEEMED TO BE A PERFECT FIT, THE NEXT QUESTION, HOW TO COMBINE A GREAT LOCAL CHARITY WITH A GREAT LOCAL GAME.

DAVE CLAUSEN
" THE IDEA KIND OF FELL TOGETHER AFTER DOING THIS LAST YEAR. IT WAS A GREAT EVENT AT THE AUD. IT MADE SENSE TO INCLUDE A 2ND TEAM AND IF YOU'RE GOING TO ADD A 2ND TEAM HERE IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY, HAMILTON COLLEGE IS THE NEXT ONE, ESPECIALLY IN WOMEN'S HOCKEY. SO IT'S JUST KINDA MADE SENSE FOR US TO GO TO A NEUTRAL SITE, AND CLINTON BEING THE TOWN THAT THE GRADY'S ARE FROM AND SHAWN GREW UP AND WENT TO SCHOOL IN, DOING THE GAME HERE IN CLINTON ARENA WE THOUGHT WOULD JUST BE THE PERFECT FIT TO GAIN SOME MORE ATTENTION FOR THE GAME.

WITH THE TEAMS SET AND THE LOCATION DETERMINED THE LAST STEP WAS RAISING FUNDS. SPECIAL GOLD RIBBON JERSEY'S WERE MADE FOR BOTH TEAMS AND AUCTIONED OFF ONLINE AND AT THE GAME. AND WHEN THE FINALLY TALLY WAS IN, THE TEAMS HAD RAISED NEARLY 4,000 DOLLARS FOR THE GRADY FUND, AND THE NEXT FAMILY IN NEED.

DAVE CLAUSEN
" FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN THAT ARE SICK GO THROUGH A LOT MORE THAN AND HAVE A LOT MORE CHALLENGES THAN JUST HOSPITAL BILLS. SO ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO DIFRAY THOSE COSTS AND HELP OUT A FAMILY IN NEED IN THIS AREA, WE WANT TO DO. "
