On Wednesday, one lucky family will be saying welcome home to their soldier. The Grimaldi's of Utica are used to saying goodbye to their father but on Wednesday they get to welcome him home.
On October 1, 2013, Staff Sergeant Robert Grimaldi said goodbye to his family. This time to Kuwait, it was his third deployment in five years.
It was definitely sad knowing he was going to be gone for the next year. He has missed a lot, it being such a short period of time the last five years there have been a lot of birthdays and holidays that he's missed,” says Katee Grimaldi, daughter.
But on Wednesday, all of that ends.
On Wednesday, the Grimaldi family piled into the car to welcome home their hero.
"It was so exciting. He came right through. The little kids ran right up to him, said that they missed him. Everyone had tears in their eyes; everyone clapped for him at the airport so everyone stood up and clapped so he definitely should feel proud. We're really proud of him," Katee says.
But that wasn't the end of the excitement for the day.
“I'm here to surprise my son at work that I came home. He knew I was coming home but he didn't know when so I’m going to surprise him,” says Sergeant Grimaldi.
And just like that, there was a very special guest waiting in line.
“Joy, just happy to see him if you saw my big smile just happy to have him home. Good to see him. He's my superhero,” says Robert, son.
Sergeant Grimaldi wasn't the only one to come home on Wednesday. The family teddy bear Betsy travels all over the world with him and she got a warm welcome as well.
