Orange vs. Green

Orange vs. Green

Friday night a tale of two colors. Genesee Street now complete with a green stripe. And the Syracuse Orange set to take to the court in ACC action on WUTR. That makes it green versus orange in the Mohawk Valley.
Friday night a tale of two colors. Genesee Street now complete with a green stripe. And the Syracuse Orange set to take to the court in ACC action on WUTR. That makes it green versus orange in the Mohawk Valley.

Saturday is the big day. The grand marshal has been crowned and the green stripe runs directly down the center of Genesee Street. Parade preparations are well under way for the biggest parade Utica has seen yet.

"This year is the largest we've had. We've got 136 floats," says Judy Weeks, parade director.

And regardless of the snow fall we got a few days ago, there are no delays.

"Not a bit. Nothing slows the Irish down," she says.

But the snow storm isn't the only thing that could slow down the flow of green. Tonight the Syracuse Orange makes their ACC Tournament debut and that could have many putting the green away to support their Orange.

“Wearing orange for the orange. We're going to plow right through the tournament and I’ll be wearing orange straight through Sunday," says Scott Brickman, of Utica.

But this orange versus green debate didn't just start in Utica. It's been around for centuries.

"Well, orange is the Northern Ireland," says John Carl, of Utica.

Northern Ireland wore orange because they Protestant and the south wore green to represent their Catholicism. But for some, this weekend will be a mixture of both orange and green.

"I mean the celebration of St. Patrick's Day and a mixture of orange and orange happens to be playing in the ACC Tournament. Happy--can't be happier," says Dick Williams, of Utica.

And don't forget whether you're wearing green or orange, stop by and say hi to the WUTR team while we're walking in the parade Saturday morning.
