Local business Meyda Lighting started out as just a hobby but on Wednesday night - the business celebrating 40 years of lighting up the city of Utica and cities around the world.
And it's a family business that's with- stood adversity over the years.
On Wednesday, they're proudly lighting-up a brand new business on Varick Street to mark the occasion.
Forty years ago it started in a basement Meyda Lighting has flourished from a small family business into a large-scale nationwide company. On Wednesday, they celebrate their success.
“We have very few in our chamber of commerce that we can say that have been around for 40 years and it is something to be really commended. They're outstanding individuals that own that company. And what's really nice is they give back to the community. That's what makes them special,” says Pam Matt, Chamber of Commerce.
Meyda Lighting had their celebration at Lukin's--a new restaurant and bar on Varick Street.
But this just wasn't a decision to come to Lukin’s because they like the place. It actually turns out that they showcase their own custom lighting here at Lukin’s.
“Everybody know us for our stained glass work but we really like to express other things that we do and custom lighting is really something that we've been focusing on for the last 10 years out of the 40 years we've been in business,” says Max Cohen, Meyda Lighting.
From a few weeks...to 40 years...Lukin’s and Meyda Lighting are bridging the gap and celebrating Utica business.
“It's great. It's great having a local business that's been here for that long kind of tie it in with something new with something that's old with the pizzeria before. And being on Varick Street in Utica is obviously the place to be,” says Thomas Karrat, Lukin’s.
