They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and when it comes to maintain weight gain, breakfast could be the answer. Eyewitness News sat down with a local health and wellness consultant to find out what we should be eating when we rise and greet the day.
If you think skipping a meal is the way to slim down, think again.
"For people that want to lose weight or maintain their weight loss, here's a tip: eat!" says Patricia Salzer.
Salzer is a registered dietitian. She says not only is it important to remember to eat when trying to maintain your weight but to eat breakfast.
"Breakfast is so important it gives you energy for the day, it helps you stay active physically and mentally to do what you have to do throughout the day,” said Salzer.
But some people say they're simply not hungry in the morning. Salzer says the solution is to break down your break-fast.
"What you can do is break down that breakfast into two smaller meals,” says Salzer. “So maybe you start the day with a piece of toast or a hardboiled egg and then a couple hours later complete that meal and have some cheese and some fruit."
If you're sick of the same old breakfast foods - there are tons of ways to switch it up.
"Here’s a chance to get really creative with your breakfast,” said Salzer. “You can have leftovers from the night before for breakfast or you could have rice and beans or if you have whole wheat couscous or brown rice you could have that similar to how you have oatmeal."
Or stick with the traditional breakfast foods but add a pinch of your own style.
"You could have a scrambled egg and add lots of vegetables to it and a low fat cheese; you could even put that in a whole wheat tortilla,” says Salzer. “You could have oatmeal and then add some dried fruit and some nuts to it or greek yogurt and add some more fruit to it."
However you choose to break your overnight fast, remember to break it every single day to help lose that weight and more importantly, keep it off.
"Studies have shown that people who do eat breakfast manage their weight better,” says Salzer. “So, skipping breakfast and skipping those calories can really hurt you in the long run by leading to weight gain. When we skip breakfast we tend to over eat later on in the day."
