Cardio exercise is a key component to a fit and healthy lifestyle but with so many different machines in the gym it can sometimes be overwhelming.
Treadmills, ellipticals and bikes, oh my! There's no shortage of options when it comes to your indoor cardio workout which trainers say is vital.
"You want to build up the cardiovascular system, you want to make your body more efficient at what it does, help with your flexibility, help with your strength it's good overall training and helps you keep in shape,” says Tim Liddon, a Certified Personal Trainer.
Liddon trains at the Fitness Mill in New York Mills. He says each machine has its own benefits. For example, working out on the elliptical puts zero pressure on the lower back, knee joints or ankles.
There are two different elliptical options.
"The elliptical movement is more an egg shaped type movement whereas the arc trainer, it's another type of elliptical trainer is more up and down, a natural walking or running movement,” said Liddon.
No matter what machine you're doing your cardio exercise on, Liddon says cardio workouts can get repetitive. He suggests adding some elevation to your machine.
For all of the treadmill runners out there, Liddon also says don't be afraid to hop on the elliptical.
"Running only trains the muscles that you run with and the elliptical will actually help you with other muscle groups supporting the body and supporting your running movement,” says Liddon.
Or try out the stationary bike.
"Say it's going to rain at night, instead of running that night, take a spin class 45 minute to an hour spin class, the benefit of that is it'll actually help your running also,” said Liddon.
Whether you're training to run or just keeping in shape, cardio in any form any day, is key.
