The Job Fair Extraordinaire is less than a week away. For the days leading up to it we will profile a job that could be your potential career.
Ryan Schmidt is a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual. This is one of the many jobs that recruiters will be looking to fill at the Job Fair Extraordinaire.
"So we'll sit down with them in their first meeting and then come up with this stuff and then make a plan based upon this," he says.
Schmidt meets with clients that want to start planning their financial future. But he didn't start there. While in college he interned with Northwestern Mutual. And they'll be looking for more interns at the job fair too.
"The internship is really the reason why I’m still doing the job today," Schmidt says.
But Schmidt’s skill set for his job as a financial representative wasn't from a college degree and Northwestern Mutual says they're looking for a personality not a background.
"We recruit to a personality, not necessarily a degree or a major," says Melanie Nobles, Northwestern Mutual.
And even though finance seems like it would be a lot of boring numbers, employees say this is an opportunity to be a part of a company that's expanding and growing every day.
"One thing that we're trying to bring is a really positive culture. So that's why we're trying to find high character people to bring into the organization who can build our leadership team as well as build our office culture so we have something that's really booming for the long term," Schmidt says.
Northwestern Mutual is looking for both interns and full-time employees. They hope to offer jobs to people that want to stay in the Utica area
Don’t forget the Job Fair Extraordinaire takes place on April 2 at MVCC. Eyewitness news will be there live.
