A special production is coming to the Stanley Theater this Saturday. Angels in America: Part One – Millennium Approaches is a Pulitzer Prize winning play and will be performed by a group of local actors.
The performance is a traveling show. The cast performed last weekend in Albany, they'll be here at the Stanley this Saturday and then in Syracuse the following weekend. For one local actor, he says performing at the Stanley is a dream come true.
"Being a local theater person and being able to perform on this stage and being able to perform on this stage is really a momentous event; it's something that I’ve looked forward to since I was a kid," says one of the cast members Adam Lawless.
Lawless says the story is filled with deep characters and deep issues.
"It’s two couples one is a Mormon couple and one is a gay couple and the gay couple is dealing with finding out that one of the partners has aids and how their relationship is going to handle that and the Mormon couple is dealing with one of the partners being gay and how their relationship is going to deal with that,” says Lawless.
Lawless says these relationships carry a lot of weight, gearing the show toward an older audience.
"This is definitely a very serious show it has a lot of weight to it and it's definitely for adults. It has a lot of adult information in it, a lot of adult language and it deals with the issue of sickness and illness in relationships in a very serious way,” said Lawless.
The intensity of the role has forced Lawless and the entire cast to challenge themselves, something he says has changed him for the better.
"I have grown as an actor and I think as a person, being able to learn this character and really get into the depths of who is he is something that I will always be grateful for,” says Lawless.
Angels in America is being put on by a local production company. The show will be at the Stanley Theater for one night only, this Saturday, April 5th. They’re having a smaller house for the performance, only 500 seats, so be sure to get your tickets.
