In Utica, we have locally made beer, vodka, gin and now bourbon. The ADK Distilling Company releasing the first legal bourbon in Central New York on Friday. And the limited supply is going fast.
The phones have been ringing off the hook...and people have been filing in to get a bottle.
Today ADK Distilling Company released 346 bottles of their first batch of bourbon. After creating an award winning vodka, gin and white whiskey, bourbon was a natural fit.
“I think we're trying to hit everyone in the spirits world and try to introduce them to a new style and a new way of drinking their spirits,” says Jordan Karp, master distiller.
But this bottle of bourbon isn't just any bourbon bottle. It's called 601 based on the address that it was distilled in. Also, each bottle in the first batch has a signature from the founding partner in the company.
“So we felt like the prohibition era style label and spirit really fit and we do justice in terms of the label and the bottling and the spirit and we pay homage to the history of this area,” Karp says.
But for the distilling company releasing the bourbon is just another treasure of Utica.
"I think that's the goal of this whole thing. Taking over an old building in downtown Utica was to put people back to work and to make people proud of what we make here and export that pride to other parts of not only the state but the country," he says.
If you’re looking to buy a bottle, you go to the ADK Distilling Company until 7 p.m. on Friday or from 11 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. They will also be selling bottles at the Cazenovia and Syracuse farmer's markets.
The second batch of bourbon is in the works -- it's been distilling for about three months now.
