Cold Snap in Utica

The people I talked to today said it’s not just the cold. It’s what comes with the cold that is hitting people hard

The people I talked to today said it’s not just the cold.

It’s what comes with the cold that is hitting people hard.

"It's hard keeping my car filled up because I have to use, you know, the heat. I have to warm it up constantly," said Utica resident Stephanie Jones

Thats not to mention her Nathional Grid bill.

"Having to keep it on more often. Having to keep it on during the day to keep my pipes warm, " said Jones.

While there are people in neighborhoods all across Utica that are having to crank up the heat all across Utica because of this winter cold snap. There are also people who don’t even have a place to stay.

"It affects you every way. I mean, you have to find a place to stay if you don’t have a roof over your head, " said Rescue Mission director Ernie Talerico

With the cold, beds are in higher demand

"We will see people coming that normally may not come if the weather wasn’t like this "

The people who the rescue mission help are just thankful they are there.

"Being in a place warm especially throughout this week, I know it’s going to be cold out, below zero and what not and it’s just a good place to come," said shelter seeker Andrew Schmitt

A Utica without the rescue mission would mean having to answer the question, ‘where would you go then?’

"I Honestly don’t know, I really don’t.  I'm just glad I don’t have to answer that question," said shelter seeker Richard Oconnor

The rescue mission can house up to thirty four people at a time and even if they reach that number they say that they will find room for anyone in need.
