The expert I talked to today said that your cyber footprint and cyber security are some of the most important things for people on the internet to be aware of. High school students are some of the ones most impacted
“Things seem to be very insecure now a day,” said Proctor High School Senior Delvin Moody
Chris Urban of SUNYIT says it can happen to anyone.
“Folks who have all sorts of bad things happen to them because of lack of security and most of that is self-inflicted.”
He says it’s not just about security though. It’s about what you post.
“More and more employers are looking out there when they’re looking to hire people they’re looking for what kind of cyber footprint people leave behind, so it’s tremendously important.”
It’s also about what your friend’s post, which is not lost on high school students.
I have to sometimes guard what they say and even comment ‘don’t say this, maybe you should delete this,’” said Moody.
One of the more harmful aspects of the internet is cyber bullying.
Most parents think it just happens on Facebook. What they don’t know is that it can also happen on websites like Twitter and Tumblr as well.
“Cyber bullying can affect high school students to such a high degree because students aren’t aware of the damage on others’ lives just by the words that they say,” said Proctor High School Junior Hilda Jordan.
The Utica School District already has a no tolerance policy on cyber bullying.
What they don’t have is a program, like the one starting in New York City, that would educate students on both their cyber footprint and the importance of cyber security.
If you want to find out about your cyber footprint there is a program called simplewash that will go through your social media pages.
That way you can see if there is anything that should be taken down.
