12 dogs found abused in Herkimer County

The Herkimer County Humane Society is dealing with possibly the worst case of dog abuse they've ever seen, taking over the care of 12 dogs in bad shape.
Herkimer - The Herkimer County Humane Society is dealing with possibly the worst case of dog abuse they've ever seen, taking over the care of 12 dogs in bad shape.

Humane society personnel and New York State Police were called to a home on Route 8 between Herkimer and Middleville and found the dozen dogs malnourished, bald and blind. At least one dog seemed to have broken bones that were never treated.

Jodie Crews, one of the shelter's managers, said, "In speaking with the vet, when you rate them on a scale of one to nine, two of them are below a one." She says the dogs are suffering from mange, skin irritation and oral hygiene problems.

New York State Police is continuing their investigation and looking into possible charges, according to the humane society, who's manger tells NewsChannel 9 that felony charges are not out of the question.

The Herkimer County Humane Society was already nearly full when the dogs came in, so they are in need of public donations. Because these dogs have contagious illnesses, they will dispose of the bedding often. If you want to donate, visit the shelter's website for more information.
