Tyler Schoff outduels Griffin Baur to lead Smith Post to a dramatic 1-0 win over Whitestown Post.
Schoff took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning, when Matt Parkinson put an end to that with a single into center field.
Whitestown then loaded the bases for Zack Wessinger, who looped one into shallow left field, but Smith shortstop Derek Miller saved at least two runs with an incredible diving catch.
Smith finally broke through in the top of the seventh, and it was all thanks to Miller. With two outs and a runner on second, Miller hit a line drive into left field to score Preston Mecca to break the scoreless tie.
In the bottom of the seventh, it appeared as though Whitestown was set up to at least tie the game. They loaded the bases with one out for Ryan Humphrey, but Schoff bared down to get the huge strikeout.
That left it up to Pat Galer, who grounded out to second base to end it. As Smith was celebrating on the field, Jack Acquaviva went after Schoff, who was quickly restrained by the Whitestown coaching staff. The teams did not shake hands following the game.
Up next for Whitestown is a matchup against Helmuth-Ingalls on Thursday evening, and Smith will be back at it on Friday against Moran/Sylvan Beach.
