Proctor drops opener in heartbreaker

Proctor's hopes for a season opening win over Vestal fell incomplete on Saturday night in the Carrier Dome.

The Raiders faced a fourth-and-six from the Vestal 27-yard line when it appeared quarterback Logan Wilcox's pass would fall right into the arms of Eric Gohringer.  Instead, the ball hit Gohringer right in the helmet and fell to the turf as Proctor dropped a heartbreaker 27-22.

Vestal got the scoring started late in the first quarter when Proctor's Jalil Pacheco fumbled and JP Saccro recovered returning it 60 yards for a touchdown.

Logan Wilcox then capped a touchdown drive with a two-yard run, and the 2-point conversion was good as Proctor took an 8-7 lead.

Vestal retook the lead on a 14-yard touchdown run from Adam Mieczkowski to put Vestal in front 15-8.  A Proctor safety, and a Jalen Woodson 12-yard touchdown run gave Proctor a 16-15 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, Matt Thrasher broke free for a 46-yard touchdown as Vestal jumped back in front 21-16.  Once again, Wilcox and Proctor responded on fourth-and-26 when Wilcox's heave landed in the arms of Asa Beyah to give the Raiders a 22-21 lead.

Vestal came right back down the field on the ensuing drive to take a 27-22 lead.  Proctor was driving in the game's final minutes, but their hopes were dashed following Gohringer's crucial drop.

The Raiders will be in action next on Saturday against RFA as they look to avoid an 0-2 start to the season.
