For the first time in 49 years, Charlie Engle was not on the sidelines for the Mount Markham boys soccer team as the Mustangs (0-1) suffered a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Poland (1-0).
Barrett Hawes was there in his place and while Mount Markham entered halftime down 1-0, Poland enforced their will in the second half.
P.J. Mahoney scored just over four minutes in off a beautiful header set up by Dale Lepper's corner kick to give the Tornadoes a 2-0 lead. Thirty second later, Kade Ozog made it 3-0 when he drove right past the Mustangs defense and placed the ball perfectly into the lower corner of the net.
Mahoney tallied his third goal of the match six minutes later when he was left all alone for the easy finish to extend the lead to 4-0. Poland would add three more goals in the half to seal the victory.
Elsewhere, Clinton soared past Westmoreland and former coach Gil Palladino 4-1 behind three goals from Masafiny Ellingson. It's the Warriors first victory of the year after they lost their opener to Cazenovia last week.
Sauquoit Valley shutout Frankfort-Schuyler 4-0. Amar Sarajlija led the Indians with two goals in that one and Sam Donnelly's lone goal lifted VVS to a 1-0 win over Sherburne-Earlville.
