Cardell Hayes' request for a new trial was denied today by a New Orleans judge paving the way for him to be sentenced later this week. 

Hayes faces up to 60 years in jail for manslaughter and attempted manslaughter charges.  He shot and killed former NFL star and Utica native Will Smith following a car accident in April of 2016.

Chad Billins is leaving the Comets in order to return to Sweden.  Billins scored 3 goals and registered 17 assists for Utica this past season and was one of just three players to appear in over 70 games. 

His absence is sure to leave a big hole in the Comets' defense.

The Utica College football team's schedule has been released.  The Pioneers will open up the season on Sep. 2nd against St. Lawrence and will begin conference play on Sep. 16th at Alfred University.  Utica College is coming off a 7-4 campaign in 2016.

Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell early Wednesday morning.  Prison officials say Hernandez hung himself with a bed sheet and he was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. 

He was serving a life sentence for murdering Odin Lloyd in 2013 and was just acquitted days ago of a separate double murder.  Aaron Hernandez was 27.
