One of the biggest groups of people preparing for Boilermaker Sunday is UPD.

“It’s huge.  Thankfully over the years we've gotten it to where we think we've perfected it," said Lt. Steve Hauck of the Utica Police Department.

He said all the roads for the race will be closed by six o’clock Sunday.

Security is also a major preparation.

“We have to balance between security and locking the place down, cause that doesn’t work," said Hauck.

The Hotel Utica is also in on the preparations.

“We are sold out on Saturday night,” said the director of sales Jessica Shumway,” we fill up usually the previous year for the following year. "

Tents are also being put up all around the area.

“It’s a pretty big event; it takes probably about a week for us to set up all the tents and everything,” said Austin Benincasa.

Mayor Palmieri said the Boilermaker is the perfect time for Utica to shine.

“What we really showcase is our people, our community.  Our volunteers are outstanding," said Mayor Palmieri.

UPD said preparations never really stop for the biggest weekend in Utica.

“Our officers start preparing literally the day after the boilermaker happens for next year, so you learn what works, what didn’t work, where you can tweak it," said Hauck.

Preparations around the finish line continue as well with the crews setting up grand stands for the thousands of people that will flock down to the finish line on Boilermaker Sunday.
