Remember that kitten crisis Eyewitness News told you about at the Herkimer Humane Society?  Well we checked back in a week later and things are starting to turn around.  It is still the height of kitten season and the shelter is at capacity housing over 75 kittens and cats but now, the community is stepping up big.

Kittens, cats and more kittens, they may be adorable but the influx is a big problem for the Herkimer Humane Society.  There’s always a spike around this time of year but after bringing the issue to the public's attention last week, future pet owners came crawling out of the woodwork.

"Well, we've been very busy, we've been getting multiple phone calls from people who are interested in adopting kittens and cats and we've had several very successful adoptions due to that,” says Shelter Manager Joanne Johnson.

And it's not just adopters.  Johnson says she's blown away by the donations that have come pouring in.

"People who are not able to adopt have also been contributing by donating cat food, cat litter, kitten food, and also some monetary donations to help with the care and the cost of the influx of kittens that we've had,” said Johnson.

Although lots of kittens and cats have been adopted here over the past week, we are still in the height of kitten season which means more and more keep coming in, like the three-week old kittens that were brought in just two days ago.

"With every cat or kitten we send out, we seem to get more in,” says Johnson.

Johnson says she even has a pregnant cat that was abandoned and brought in a few days ago.  So if you're interested in a new kitten or adult cat, the Herkimer Humane Society can help you find the purrrr-fect fit.

The adoption fee for all kittens and cats is $60 and all pets are up to date on their shots before they are able to be adopted.
