It was a day of clean-up in southern Herkimer County on Friday.  That after a severe storm swept through the region prompting the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning on Thursday afternoon.

A tornado warning issued for southern Herkimer County around 4 p.m. on Thursday.  It expired just an hour later - but in that short amount of time, the devastation was vast.

The Village of West Winfield in Herkimer County was one of the hardest hit areas.

“But there were a lot of detours and a lot of massive trees just uprooted.  so it had to be something like a microburst or a tornado,” says Lynn Kent, of West Winfield.

Heavy winds splitting trees in half and downing power lines -- much of the area was left in the dark.  Some couldn't even get to their homes.

On Friday, the village was busy with clean-up efforts and one family says they're just lucky to be alive after a large tree fell on top their home.

"It's very scary,” says Madison Radziewicz, of West Winfield.

Madison was playing in her room when a tree from across the street landed directly on top of her bedroom.

"All of the sudden there was just a big thunder and lightning struck the house and then there's a big crack in my wall and some of the roof fell," she says.

Madison's family had just recently moved into their new home.  They’ve been in the process of painting and fixing up the home.

“We had prior to that been in painting and getting everything nice and then a tornado hit kind of destroyed a lot of that work,” says Jennifer Radziewicz, of West Winfield.

The family--like many other West Winfield families--spending the day cleaning up the mess.  A day that is for most all about fireworks and parades is now a day of rebuilding.

“I mean it was BBQ and that kind of thing but now it's clean up,” says Kris Case, of West Winfield.

Some are still without power in West Winfield.  No injuries were reported in connection with Thursday afternoon's storm.
