Today mayors around the country recognizing people who perform community service.

Utica Mayor Palmieri was one of 1,700 mayors nation-wide to recognize volunteers.  Several volunteer programs celebrated the day including the Foster Grandparent program and AmeriCorps.  Volunteers say even though they enjoy this day, they don't do it for the recognition.

“We do the work because we want to be there and we want to help.  We're all volunteers so our team is great when we're all together and everyone is there because we want to get the job done, we want to help,” says Kelly Guernsey, volunteer.

This is the second year Utica has honored their volunteers on this day.
