For the first time in about 20 years, AHL skates hit the ice at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Training camp for the AHL's newest team -- the Utica Comets -- is underway.

Dozens of players -- who just arrived in Utica for the very first time -- are fighting for a final spot on the roster.

Players we spoke with say they're excited to be a part of a brand new chapter of professional hockey in Central New York and are looking forward to the upcoming season.

"It's been a long training camp and we have a few more days here.  We are getting into exhibition games, everybody is thrilled.  We have a great group of guys in the room and hopefully expect big things," said Forward, Darren Archibald.

"Coming to the building yesterday and just seeing what they have put together and seeing pictures from back when I was hired in July to what it is now, it really is remarkable what they have done, the work they have done," said Comets Head Coach, Travis Green.

Training camp is scheduled to run through October 6th.

Meantime, pre-season action has already started for the Comets.

They lost their first ever pre-season game against the Abbotsford Heat, in Canada, over the weekend.

The Comets visit the Hershey Bears on Friday.  On Sunday, they host the Adirondack Phantoms at John F. Kennedy Arena, in Rome.  The Comets finish up their pre-season on the road against the Hamilton Bulldogs on October 3rd.
