When it comes to weight loss, many of us immediately think eating less is the way to go. But according to a local health expert, the key to losing weight is to start snacking. Healthy snacking throughout the day can help you maintain a healthy weight, but snacks don't have to mean potato chips and cookies, there are tons of ways to get creative with nutrition packed snacks.
People who eat healthy snacks throughout the day tend to consume fewer calories overall than those with different eating patterns.
"One of the best things to do if you're trying to lose weight or maintain your weight is to have a snack, it really helps you from over eating at the next meal, it takes far fewer calories to prevent hunger than to deal with hunger once it occurs,” says Patricia Salzer, Registered Dietitian for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
We all know hunger occurs during the day but don't just reach blindly into the snack cabinet. Salzer says it's important to think hard when choosing a snack.
"The key thing though is what you're snacking on, so this is not a free for all for potato chips and for the unhealthy foods but if you have a healthy snack, it helps you get the nutrition that you need during the day," said Salzer.
Salzer says a handful of nuts is the perfect healthy snack. They'll help you feel full for longer and that's just one of her recommendations.
"One idea is Greek yogurt and if you add some fruit to it it's a nice substantial snack that will help you get from meal to meal and it gives you some extra fruit throughout the day and some dairy,” said Salzer.
She also recommends snacking on popcorn or cheese and whole grain crackers, keeping portion sizes in mind. Healthy snacking leads to a healthy weight which leads to a healthy lifestyle.
