It's that time of year again. Adults who are 65 years or older, or disabled, have the opportunity to re-evaluate and switch their Medicare Advantage Plans. Earlier this week, the open enrollment period for Medicare began. Medicare recipient have until December 7th to take a look at their current plan and change it, or enroll for the first time. Paula Florentino with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield says everyone's needs are different, so start by asking yourself some questions.
“You have to consider you know how often do you see your provider, are you someone who sees your provider three times a week, once a month, do you need prescription drug coverage, do you travel?"
Even if you're happy with your current Medicare Advantage Plan, it's worth checking to see if there are any changes that might indicate another plan would be best for you. Would you rather pay a higher monthly premium, and less when you go to the doctor, or vice versa? These are the things to keep in mind.
“The greatest part is what I tell people you know what you can always go to, and you can actually see the star ratings for all the carriers."
Florentino says the star rating is like a report card, feedback from current customers regarding a specific plan, and something certainly worth checking out before enrolling. She says there are a lot of advertisements out there that can be confusing, so be sure to educate yourself before picking a plan. And, other than the website, for Excellus customers, the company has several Medicare informational seminars throughout the area through December to assist people.
