UTICA (WUTR)--- WUTR/WFVX's parent company, Nexstar Media Group, is celebrating 21 years of providing television news to communities nationwide. To celebrate the milestone, the news station is taking part in Nexstar's Founder's Day of Caring, an effort to give back to the Utica community.
"We are very proud of the work that Habitat does," said WUTR/WFXV's General Manager, Stephen Ventura. "We are very proud to partner with them on several events throughout the year."
The WUTR team got to work wiping down tables, setting up tents, organizing shelves, and moving furniture at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and tent sale. All of the items at the store are donated and sold for a discounted price.
"The proceeds supplement our building services program. They help do home repairs for our elderly, our disabled, our veterans, and families who have fallen in financial circumstance," said Louis LaBella of Oneida County's Habitat for Humanity.
Utica's Habitat for Humanity strives to build 3 houses for local families each year.
"The work that they do building homes for people and teaching them to sustain these homes... it gives them an opportunity that they might not otherwise have," explained Ventura.
LaBella said having extra volunteers is extremely helpful, and the WUTR staff is happy to take part.
"We are so indebted and grateful to WUTR, their staff and Steve Ventura for all of the support that they have given us throughout the years," said LaBella.
More and more funeral homes are bringing in canine helpers.
