There are many Boilermaker traditions in the area and one of those is the annual competition between the Utica Police and Fire Departments.

Each year the two forces compete and the department with the first five fastest 15k runners wins a traveling trophy and of course, bragging rights.

The award ceremony was held Wednesday granting the Utica Fire Department with the trophy. Runners from both departments say win or lose, the Boilermaker is all about their community.

“Just what a great feeling it is for the community to come out and support not only the police and fire but all of the runners that come in from out of state it's just a great and worthwhile cause for the community,” says Chris Tullar of the Utica Fire Department.

“Just the excitement, the crowds, it's a real wonderful activity especially in a job like this where sometimes things can be a little negative sometimes to see the whole community come out in such a cooperative and facilitating fashion,” said John Toomey of the Utica Police Department.

This is the 10th year of the friendly competition.
